Miners set to tangle with Longhorns Monday and Tuesday at 11 am.

El Paso -- The Miners are playing some of their best hockey, on both ends of the ice. Miners are coming off a sweep at home against the Texas A&M Aggies, the Miners look to their next challenge, conference leader the University of Texas Longhorns. “The Longhorns are coming into the series as the best team, not only in our division but in the league,” said Coach Herman. “They are well-coached, skilled and talented from top to bottom.”

Since mid-November, the Miners haven’t lost a game, have tallied 81 goals, have outscored their opponents by more than three goals in seven games and have yet to lose a game on home ice. “We take a lot of pride in playing at home,” said Herman. “It is always an advantage to play on your own ice and in front of your own fans. We’ve been fortunate to always play well and step up when we play at home.”

The offense lead by Austin Simpson continues to be dominant every game, including last Monday and Tuesday scoring eight goals against the Aggies. While the special teams have a near perfect penalty kill at 93.3%, which leads TCHC. “The games we have had against them have always been fast paced, hard hitting and exciting series’,” said Herman, “This series shouldn’t be any different with two possible wins on the line for each team.”

Miners vs Longhorns
This will be the third meeting between both teams and final meeting in the regular season. Last time, the Miners and Longhorns met game one went into overtime, with the Longhorns coming out on top, but the Miners came back to win game two 6-2. The Longhorns were the Miners first loss of the season and will look to win the series at home and overall. “Comes down to playing 60 minutes of hockey and outworking your opponent. We have been trying to concentrate on good habits and keeping things simple,” said Herman. “We know they have several players that can score and solid goaltending.”

“It is going to take a complete team effort and everyone pulling the same way.”

Scouting the Longhorns
The Longhorns are currently 12-2-1-1 overall on the season in TCHC, 5-1-1-1 in division play. Leading the south division of TCHC, the Longhorns are nine points ahead of the Miners. Prior to the holiday break, UT swept TCU and won one game against Texas State. David Hutto has made eight appearances between the pipes for the Longhorns. Hutto has logged 240 minutes for the Longhorns, he has allowed 14 goals this season, 3.50 per game and has a save percentage of .906. Forward Joe Kurita leads with 20 points (12 G, 9 A). Along with Kurita, Ethan Chun has 20 points (5 G, 15 A) this season.
