Miners prepped and ready for division matchup against Aggies
El PASO – The Miners have gone eleven days without playing a game. With plenty of hours spent practicing the last two weeks, the Miners are eager to get back into game mode. “Practices have been going well,” said Coach Herman. “Players had a chance to get caught up on their school work, enjoy UTEP Homecoming and now it is back to work and prepare for the upcoming TCHC weekend.”
The well rested Miners will head east to College Station for a two game match up with the Texas A&M Aggies at Spirit Ice Arena, starting Friday night. Game two will follow Saturday evening. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT both nights.
You can watch the game live on Black Dog Hockey or follow UTEP Hockey on social media for game updates.
Miners vs Aggies
In the past three season, the Miners and Aggies have met a total of ten times, accumulating a 5-5 overall record. Last season, the Miners opened on the road against Texas A&M and suffered a sweep by the Aggies. “Since day one, our games against them have been a battle from start to finish,” said Coach Herman. “I think it is safe to say that the games will be in similar nature this weekend in College Station.”
The Aggies scored a total ten goals that weekend to the Miners three goals scored by Kevin Duncan and Dominik Taras. When the Aggies came to El Paso, the game ended much differently. The Miners took game one easily with a 3-1 win over Texas A&M. Game two, ended a bit more dramatically and the Miners completed the sweep at home.
It wouldn’t be until the first round of the TCHC playoffs that both teams would meet each other again. Miners struggled to score and were down by two goals in the third period. Going with the common theme, the game would be anything less than exciting. UTEP would come back in the third period and take the lead and earn a hard fought 5-4 win and advance to the semi-finals.
“A&M has always been a tough opponent. They are disciplined and well coached and I don’t expect anything different from them this coming weekend,” said Coach Herman.
