El Paso, TX -- The Miners ended the first weekend of the season with an exclamation point, scoring a total of 31 goals in two games. UTEP improves to 2-0 on the season with a great showing against the Red Raiders.
Following Friday nights 21-1 win, the Miners were back Saturday afternoon for game two. The Miners came out strong the first period with goals by Kevin Duncan, Jayden Ritchie, Fabian Calderon and Matt Sanca. The Red Raiders could not answer and the Miners would head to the locker room with a 4-0 lead.
The Miners two second period goals by Fabian Perez and Noah Vanderzwan would go unanswered and increase the Miners lead to 6-0.
Heading into the final frame, Fabian Perez, Noah Vanderzwan and Matt Sanca pick up their second goals of the game giving the Miners a 9 goal lead against the Red Raiders. Finally, with less than thirty seconds left in the game, Jon Sanca assisted by brother Matt Sanca scores making the final score, 10-0.
Noah Vanderzwan was again a standout and led the team with 4 points from two goals and two assists.
Matt and Jon Sanca played a crucial part for the Miners in this second game of the home stand. Matt Sanca finished the day with 3 points from two goals and one assist. Jon Sanca had a goal and a helper on his brother’s second goal. The brothers both saw a lot of ice time and played a very physical game.
Fabian Perez found his stride against Tech as well finding the back of the net unassisted and helping on a Vanderzwan goal.
Tech finished the day with ten shots on goal all of them swallowed up by John-Luke Prystayko. The Toronto native saw his first action of the season between the pipes and had a great showing including the always coveted shutout.
Next up, the Miners head out on the road and kick off conference play in Austin, Texas. The three game road trip starts Friday night against Texas State. They will then cap of the weekend with a two game series against the University of Texas.
