RECAP: Miners win 8th straight at home

Miners improve to 12-3 in conference play.

EL PASO, Texas -- Eager to kick off the new year, Jorge Duenas would be the first to score in 2018 assisted by Gabe Goodroe and Noah Vanderzwan. Longhorns would waste no time and answer back to even the score. But not for long as Matt Sanca would find the back of the net and put the Miners back in the lead, 2-1. Following a Longhorn penalty, Dominik Taras would get a penalty shot and score increasing the Miner lead to 2 goals at the end of the 1st.
 
Keeping the momentum going, returning sophomore Parker Levitt would get his first of the season and make it a 4-1 Miner lead 1 minute into the 2nd. Still no answer from the Longhorns. Dominik Taras assisted by Sanca brothers Jon and Matt scores, 5-1 Miners. Longhorns get one passed Lazarski and come within 3 goals of the Miners. Ammar Haider scores his first goal as a Miner and the Miners take a 6-2 lead with less than 4 minutes remaining in the 2nd. Longhorns score with about a minute left, making it a 6-3 Miner lead at the end of the period.
 
Matt Sanca opens scoring for the 3rd period with an even strength goal assisted by Dominik Taras. Longhorns battle one in and cut the Miner lead back to 3 goals. Not wasting any time Parker tallies his second goal of the season and secures a win for the Miners. The Miners win, 8-4.
 
Back Wednesday morning, the Miners were ready to close out the series. The puck dropped and the game would go scoreless until 3 minutes remaining in the 1st Period. The Longhorns strike first and the Miners head to locker room down by 1 goal.
 
The puck drops for the 2nd, Dominik Taras slides the puck in assisted by Jon Sanca and the score is knotted at one. Not for long as Freshman Forward, Noah Vanderzwan nets one for the Miners and UTEP takes their first lead of the game. With seconds left in the 2nd, Dominik Taras get his second of the game and the Miners keep a 2-goal lead at the buzzer.
 
Back for the final frame, six minutes into the 3rd period Fabian Perez tallies his second goal of the season and makes the score 4-1 Miners. The Longhorns score but the Miners hold on and win, completing the sweep over the UT Longhorns.
 
Over 600 students from local elementary schools joined the Miners to learn the science behind the sport of hockey during their Science on Ice Series against the UT Longhorns.
 
Up next, the Miners will face off against the Texas State Bobcats, January 20th and 21st at the El Paso County Events Center.
