EL PASO, TX – The Miners kicked of the 2016-17 season with a 3 game road series in Dallas/Fort Worth. Miners faced off against TCU on night 1 of the 3-day road trip. Kevin Duncan put the Miners on the board first and the Miners went into the 1st intermission leading by 1.
Early in the 2nd Period TCU answered back and tied the game at 1. Not for long as Freshman Storm Evans gave the Miners back their lead, 2-1. Going into the 3rd period, Miners lead by 1 and kept the streak going with goals from Brett Bloor, Jeramy Rezaeepour, and Matt Sanca. Miners won their first game of the season 5-1.
Newcomers, Kevin Duncan, Brett Bloor, Storm Evans, and Matt Sanca recorded their first collegiate goals of their career.
Back on Saturday for Game 2, Miners couldn’t seem to find their flow at the start and TCU scored first, 1-0 Frogs. After 20 minutes, the Frogs would head to the locker room with a 1 goal lead. In the 2nd Period, The Miners would strike first with a goal from Jeramy Rezaeepour assisted by Storm Evans and tie the game at 1.
Once again Kevin Duncan helps the Miners take the lead with his goal to open the 3rd period. Miners lead by 1. Quick goals from Nicholas Howell and Lukas Znosko help increase the Miner lead. Miners hold onto their lead and win the game, 4-1.
With the sweep against TCU, the Miners moved on to the final game of the weekend against North Texas, in the first of the two game series.
The Eagles waste no time and score quickly at the start of the 1st period, 1-0 Eagles. Miners don’t take long to answer back and Brett Bloor puts the Miners up on the board and follows up quickly with a second goal. Miners take their first lead of the game, 2-1 Miners.
North Texas scores and ties the game at 2. With 1 minute and 45 second remaining in the first Lukas Znosko regained the lead for the Miners.
Miners increase their lead by 2 in the 2nd Period with goals from Joshua Baeza and Jeramy Rezaeepour. North Texas answered back and cuts the Miner lead by 1, 5-3 Miners.
UTEP heads into the 3rd Period up by 3. Both Miners and Eagles exchange goals, but as the clock winds down Miners secure their 3rd win of the weekend with the final goal with 10 sec remaining from Jon Sanca.
UTEP wraps up the first road series of the weekend up 3-0 in conference play. Next weekend the Miners head to College Station to take on Texas A&M for a two game road series. Before returning home, the Miners will complete the series against North Texas at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter – Farmers Branch.
