The UTEP Miners once again split with the Texas State Bobcats. The Miners opened their season against the Bobcats with a split - a win on Friday and a loss on Saturday.
Friday night in El Paso, the Miners would come out strong in front of their hometown fans going up 5-2 after the first period. Lukas Znosko would score a hat trick in the first period as Anthony Regnier and Felix Loiselle also scored for the Miners.
The Miners would extend their lead in the second as they would score three more goals - Znosko with his fourth of the night as well as Jan Dam and Josh Baeza chipping in.
Going into the 3rd period with an 8-3 lead, the Miners would add some insurance and close out the game 9-5.
Saturday nights game started very similar to Friday night. The Miners would come out strong and go up 4-1 in the first period. Being without Jeramy Rezaeepour due to a suspension, the Miners would still find their offense. However, during the first, Lukas Znosko would find himself exiting the ice due to an altercation in front of the Miner's net.
Even without Rezaeepour and Znosko, the Miners would trade goals with the Bobcats and finish the second period up 5-2.
However, in the 3rd fatigue and mental breakdowns would set in. Anthony Regnier would extend the Miners lead to 6-3 with only 8 minutes left in the game, but the Bobcats would find their scoring touch. The Miners couldn't capitalize on their chances while the Bobcats would and score even strength, short-handed, and on the power play to win 7-6. Almost the exact same ending as opening weekend, the Miners would lose their lead and split with the Bobcats over the weekend.
The Miners close out the first half of the season on the road against the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque, NM December 4th and 5th.
The Miners will be back on home ice to take on the Texas A&M Aggies Thursday, January 7th at 7:30pm and will be having their first "Orange Out". So make sure to mark your calendars, wear your UTEP orange, and come out and support your Miners.
