I-25 Rivalry is BACK

The UTEP Miners Hockey Club hosted UNM November 6th and 7th and it didn't disappoint for excitement.

Friday night's game saw both teams going back and forth during the first period.  The Miners had several opportunities, however the Lobo's goalie would prove to be a difference maker.  UNM would open up the scoring half way through the period.  However, Anthony Regnier would tie the game as time expired in the 1st period.

The Miners would open the second period taking the lead following some solid forechecking by Hunter Krick who would intercept the puck and finish off the play by himself. Defensive breakdowns and missed assignments would prove costly for the Miners as they give up 3 goals in the second and head into the intermission down 4-2.

The tide didn't change for the Miners in the 3rd period. Although they had a lot of chances, they were unable to capitalize. UNM would extend their lead to 6-2 until Regnier would find the net once again to make it 6-3. Even with the goalie pulled, the Miners wouldn't be able to get any closer and fall 7-3.

SATURDAY'S atmosphere was electric.  With another great crowd nearing capacity, the Miners wouldn't disappoint. Just over a minute in, Baeza would get the Miners on the board. The Miners would go up 2-0 before the 2 minute mark of the first period as Regnier would find the back of the net. After UNM made it 2-1, Regnier would notch his second of the night to make it 3-1.  Before the end of the period, both teams would trade off goals as the Miner's Baeza would make it 4-2 on the powerplay before the end of the first.

The second period saw the Miners take a step back as the Lobos would score twice in the period to tie up the game. Although the Miners had their chances, they couldn't capitalize.

The Miners came out flying in the 3rd period and scored four straight goals from Felix Loiselle, Jeramy Rezaeepour with two, and Lukas Znosko to take the lead 8-4.  The Lobos would add a powerplay goal before the end of the game to make it 8-5, but the Miners held on for the victory.

It was another great weekend of Miners hockey.  The team would like to thank the fans for once again filling the stands and cheering on their Miners.

Next up, the Miners will host the Texas State Bobcats November 20th and 21st and 7:30pm. It will be the final homestand for the Miners before Christmas.
