The 2019-2020 season has come to an end for the UTEP Hockey club. Three Miners had a season to remember and were named to all-conference teams. One Miner rookie had the honor of being named TCHC rookie of the year, while another Miner was named TCHC MVP. Coach Tom Herman also made history during the season.
In his second year with the Miners, forward Austin Simpson had another big season leading the Miners in scoring with 72 points with 33 goals and 39 assists on the season. Simpson finds himself just five points behind Matt Sanca for all-time leader in points for the Miners. Simpson picked up four hat tricks this season, bringing his career total to eleven which is the most in team history. Simpson scored five goals on two accusations this season, the most scored by a Miner in a single game this year. Simpson continues to make his presence known in the TCHC as he was named to the 1st All-Conference Team and TCHC MVP for the second year in a row.
Another Miner backing up their success form their rookie year was Carlo Wittor. In his second season, Wittor picked up 55 points with 29 goals and 26 assists in 26 games. He also scored one goal for the Miners during the playoffs. Wittor picked up two hat tricks on the season, bringing his career total to nine trailing only Austin Simpson for most career hat tricks. After two seasons with the team, Wittor has 166 points in his career. Wittor was named to the TCHC 2nd Team All-Conference.
In his fourth season with the Blue and Orange, Jon Sanca found himself playing a new position for the team. After spending the last three seasons playing forward for the Miners, Sanca was moved to the defenseman position. This did not stop his production as he picked up 23 points with sevens goals and 16 assist leading all defensemen in goals for the team. In four years Sanca has played in 113 games picking up 133 points with 45 goals and 88 assists in that time. He is fourth all-time in assist for the team. He was named to the TCHC 2nd Team All-Conference for his efforts on the season.
Form WSHL El Paso Rhino, Donald Alchin had an impressive rookie season with the Miners. After helping lead the El Paso Rhinos to back Thorn Cup championships, the center joined the Miners and had an immediate impact. The freshman picked up 56 points with 27 goals and 29 assists. Alchin also picked up two hat tricks on the season. After this success it was no surprise Alchin was named the TCHC rookie of the year.
Head coach Tom Herman reach a historical milestone this season. The bench boss for the Miners the last five years picked up his 100th win with the team. This came on November 17th, 2019 with a 7-2 win over Grand Canyon University.
